Hafeem (marijuana) Box, mid 19th century
*

*
In the days of war with foot soldiers and swords, hafeem or marijuana was used
as a painkiller in the battlefield. Each solider carried a paste with him, in a hafeem box, hanging
from his belt.
This hafeem box is from Rajasthan, circa 1850 is an excellent example.
Incidentally, certain tribes in Rajasthan are still permitted legally to consume hafeem as part of their lifestyle.
