Hanging adornment, North India, late 19th century

This adornment could have been worn as a challa - a piece that hangs from the skirt tie at the waist,
or at the end of the palloo or the sari end. The bells create a pleasing sound and attract attention.
In the past 30-40 years this category has been adapted to include a key ring,
holding keys to the tijjori (the household safe)
that plays an important role in the domestic politics of joint families.
The modern descendents of this piece are flat and not 3 dimensional.
